DEVELOPMENTS

Taua are tackling inequality factors in New Zealand by reimagining the way we plan and design neighbourhoods. Statistically, Maori and Pasifika have been hit the hardest when it comes to the housing crisis. Getting rooves over heads is a great start. Every whanau deserves to feel safe, warm and dry. But we want to take things further. Our bold mission is to create inclusive neighbourhoods through neuro-architecture and community-focused design. We consult to government and private sector on designing socially sustainable housing developments that bring New Zealanders together.

NEURO-ARCHITECTURE IN AOTEAROANeuro-architecture is the study of how the body and brain respond to the built environment. It means considering the impact of house and neighbourhood design on how we behave within our homes and relate to our neighbours. When you cluster social housing together, communities degrade and ghettos form. If you build more than 20% social housing in an area, resilience factors go down and poverty factors go up. In South Auckland, there is 30% social housing in some suburbs. This intensification of social housing leads to an intensification of negative social outcomes. We believe we can create a positive upward spiral through designing inclusive communities with a range of housing options to attract a mixed race, mixed wealth demographic. We have researched the best neuro-designed communities around the world, which offer affordable eco-conscious housing, enhance wellbeing and support community thriving.

DESIGNING INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIESThe Ministry for Housing and Urban Development see that we are onto something here. They have asked us to create a conceptual design for a large, brand-new community that addresses current and future pain-points.

PAPAKAINGA

Taua are tackling the housing crisis in Aotearoa by helping whanau/ropu to develop well-designed papakainga in Tauranga annd the Bay of Plenty that support thriving communities.Maori and Pasifika are over-represented in negative housing statistics. We don’t like that and we want to do something about it. We believe in Maori building for Maori.

Let’s Talk About You.So, let’s talk about your whanau, your ropu. You have land – ancestral whenua. You want your people to have a roof over their head, a community to belong to. You want to develop a papakainga on your ancestral land so your whanau have access to affordable housing and a secure cultural identity to grow from. You want to set your people up to thrive - now and into the future.

What are the barriers?  Well, money can be a bit of a worry. And perhaps you’re not sure where to start with this project, or who to trust for advice.

Taua Can Help.Taua is dedicated to enhancing papakainga planning, design and building. Yes, it’s about affordable housing.

But TAUA homes are just the start. We can help you to design eco-friendly, socially sustainable, future-focused, income-generating papakainga that help your whanau go from surviving to thriving.

  • We can design, plan and build a quality papakainga on your whenua.
  • We can guide you from where you are to where you want to be.
  • We can help you understand the support you can get from Te Puni Kokori (TPK) and how to access it.
  • We can work with you and TPK to upgrade underground infrastructure and get your land ready to build on.
  • We can build TAUA homes and design your papakainga to serve your whanau’s needs and dreams.

THE PLAN

  1. We visit you on your land to understand your vision and needs.
  2. We submit a proposal with initial papakainga concept and costs.
  3. We help you liaise with TPK to get funding for full conceptual plans and infrastructure support.
  4. We’ll develop architectural plans and technical drawings for buildings and papakainga design.
  5. You sign off on the plan and the costs.
  6. Spade in the ground! Let the building begin.

Elijah’s Personal Papakainga Story I have project managed a Papakainga development on our Maori whanau owned land here in Tauranga, in the Bay of Plenty. We have seven properties in total on our whenua. My wife and I live in a new build and manage and maintain the other properties. We have whanau in three homes and are privately renting two, creating income. Developing this papakainga in Tauranga has added value to our land, has generated income and, most of all, provided homes for whanau, which gives me a sense of pride and fulfilment. I believe developing papakainga lifts the value of the land and lifts the vision and mindset of whanau. It is good for whanau to experience success in this area.
